The Chaffoteaux combination boilers and water heaters make use of a rubber diaphragm to activate the domestic hot water by diverting the primary water circuit towards the plate heat exchanger. This supplies hot water to the taps or perhaps shower. One side on the diaphragm is subject to indirect heat via the hot water in the primary circuit flowing through the hydraulic assembly. This design is common in combination boilers and other water heating system appliances. If a diaphragm has failed the boiler it won't switch easily between supplying water to the hot taps and providing central heating. In this situation it'll need swapping. Many heating engineers will recommend swapping the entire hydraulic section.
